Known as “The Post by the Lake,” our name reflects our scenic location along the shores of Coe Lake in Berea, Ohio. Our Post is named after Albert E. Baesel, a Berea native and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War I.

our history

Twenty Berea veterans establish Post 91, officially receiving its American Legion charter on September 5, 1919. The Post is named in honor of Albert E. Who Was
Albert E. Baesel?

Albert E. Baesel was a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army from Berea, Ohio. He served during World War I. Tragically, he was killed in action on September 27, 1918, in Ivry, France. In recognition of his extraordinary bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor (CMOH) in 1922. Baesel was the first Ohio soldier to be killed in action during World War I. His company, after the battle, created a simple grave using a mess kit for digging, crafting a cross from tree branches tied with boot laces, and attaching one of Baesel’s ID tags. In early 1926, Baesel’s grave was discovered by French farmers while plowing for unexploded artillery shells. Shortly after, his remains were returned to Berea, Ohio, where he was given a proper burial at Woodvale Cemetery in Middleburg Heights, Ohio.

Upon hearing that a squad leader of his platoon had been severely wounded while attempting to capture an enemy machine-gun nest about 200 yards in advance of the assault line and somewhat to the right, 2d Lt. Baesel requested permission to go to the rescue of the wounded corporal. After thrice repeating his request and permission having been reluctantly given, due to the heavy artillery, rifle, and machine-gun fire, and heavy deluge of gas in which the company was at the time, accompanied by a volunteer, he worked his way forward, and reaching the wounded man, placed him upon his shoulders and was instantly killed by enemy fire.
