American Legion Buckeye Boys State is an immersive, week-long leadership and government education program designed to teach young men about the structure and operation of Ohio’s state and local government. Sponsored by the American Legion Department of Ohio, the program brings together high school juniors from across the state to participate in a hands-on experience where they create and run a simulated government at the city, county, and state levels. Held annually at Miami University, Buckeye Boys State fosters leadership, civic engagement, and teamwork, providing participants with valuable skills and insights into public service, lawmaking, and governance.
The Berea Baseball Association (BBA) is a non-profit organization that has been serving youth athletes in Berea, Ohio, and the surrounding areas since 1975. The BBA offers recreational T-ball, baseball, and fastpitch softball programs for children aged 4 to 18, providing uniforms and equipment,
The Berea City School District serves Berea, Brook Park, and Middleburg Heights, Ohio, with one high school (Berea–Midpark High School), one middle school (Berea–Midpark Middle School), and three elementary schools (Brook Park, Big Creek, and Grindstone). The district has undergone consolidations, including the 2013 merger of Berea and Midpark High Schools and the restructuring of its middle school. Known for its strong commitment to academics and music education, the district has been recognized as one of the “Best Communities for Music Education” for multiple years.
Boy Scouts Troop 228 is a youth organization based in Berea, Ohio, dedicated to fostering leadership, community service, and outdoor skills among its members. The troop is chartered by the United Methodist Church of Berea and operates within the Lake Erie Council. The troop actively participates in various community service projects, such as organizing food drives in collaboration with local organizations. Additionally, members undertake individual initiatives like the restoration of historical sites as part of their progression toward the Eagle Scout rank. Through these activities, Troop 228 aims to instill values of responsibility, citizenship, and personal growth in its scouts.

Gifts for the Yanks is a charitable program dedicated to supporting hospitalized and disabled veterans in Ohio. Originally started during World War II, the initiative provides gifts, comfort items, and financial assistance to veterans in VA hospitals, care facilities, and homes across the state. Sponsored by The American Legion Department of Ohio, the program is funded through donations from Legion posts, members, and community supporters, ensuring that veterans receive appreciation and support year-round, especially during the holiday season.
Louis Schmidt Award is the highest honor given by the BioCommunications Association (BCA), formerly the Biological Photographic Association (BPA). Established in 1948 and renamed in 1953 to honor the association’s second president, Louis Schmidt, the award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of biological communication. Louis Schmidt was in charge of photography at the Rockefeller Institute in New York City and was a founding member of the BPA in 1931.
The U.S. Student Exchange Program offers American students opportunities to study abroad and international students the chance to study in the U.S. These programs, sponsored by the U.S. government, private organizations, and educational institutions, promote cultural exchange, language learning, and global understanding.

All candidates shall be a child, grandchild, stepchild, or orphan of an active member of Post 91 of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, or Sons of The American Legion. All candidates must be high school seniors or graduates of an accredited high school.
Albert E. Baesel Scholarship awards $1,000 to a deserving student in honor of Albert E. Baesel. This scholarship recognizes academic achievement and dedication to service, reflecting the values Albert Baesel exemplified.
The American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship is an academic scholarship by Post 91 American Legion Auxiliary.
The Dave “Bear” Hof Scholarship is a Sons of the American Legion scholarship named in honor of longtime S.A.L. Post 91 member Dave Hof.
The Don and Barb Vaji Gifts for the Yanks Scholarship. Established through the generosity of Don and Barb Vaji, this scholarship is intended to assist individuals associated with and/or a member in good standing of American Legion Post 91.
The James C. & Margaret Masie Scholarship is a $2,000 athletic scholarship named in honor of James C. “Jim” & Margaret “Peg” Masie. This scholarship is awarded to a student-athlete who exemplifies dedication, teamwork, and sportsmanship both on and off the field.
The Thomas Marks Scholarship provides $1,000 in honor of Thomas Marks, the first Commander of Post 91. It is awarded to a student who demonstrates leadership, commitment, and a strong sense of community.
The Virginia Offenberg Scholarship is a $1,000 nursing scholarship named in honor of long-time Post 91 member Virginia Offenberg. This award supports students pursuing a career in nursing, continuing Virginia’s legacy of care and service.
Led by the Building Chairman, the Building Committee is responsible for overseeing the care and maintenance of Post 91’s facilities, including all building and grounds upkeep.
Our two Color Guard units consist of Post 91 Members from the American Legion, Sons of the American Legion, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Throughout the year, the Post 91 Color Guard proudly participates in various parades, including leading the colors at Berea’s Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony. The units also perform honors at funeral services and veteran-related ceremonies. The Color Guard has been recognized multiple times for their professionalism and dedication.
The leadership and management of Post 91 are entrusted to the Executive Committee. Alongside the Post 91 Commander, they oversee all three units and make final decisions on matters relating to the Post.
The James C. Masie Golf Committee organizes the annual James C. Masie Memorial Golf Classic, a golf outing that raises funds for The James C. & Margaret Masie Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Post 91 offers support to families in need of veteran-related burial services, both for members and non-members. Services include military funeral honors, burial in a National Cemetery, a burial flag, and Color Guard participation. Additionally, we assist with accessing services through the VA and the Cuyahoga County Veterans Services Commission to ensure veterans and their families receive the recognition and benefits they deserve.
The Sunshine Fund is a special benefit for Post 91 members, offering support in hosting a “Celebration of Life” for their loved ones. This fund provides catered food and access to our hall for up to four hours, creating a comfortable space for family and friends to gather and honor their memories. The Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery is a national cemetery located in Seville, Ohio, managed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. It serves as a final resting place for eligible veterans, their spouses, and certain dependents, offering a dignified burial with military honors.
The cemetery provides veteran burial benefits, including a grave site, headstone or marker, burial flag, Presidential Memorial Certificate, and perpetual care at no cost to the family. It is part of the National Cemetery Administration’s mission to honor veterans with a lasting tribute for their service. The cemetery spans over 273 acres and is designed to accommodate future generations of veterans.
Veterans receive burial benefits, including a free grave site in a national cemetery, perpetual care, a government-issued headstone or marker, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate. Military funeral honors, such as flag presentation and “Taps,” are also available. For private cemetery burials, the VA provides a headstone, marker, or medallion, along with a burial flag. Burial allowances may assist with funeral costs, and eligible spouses and dependents can be buried alongside the veteran in a national cemetery.
